HEALTHY LIVING

The Legacy Foundation focuses on addressing disparities in health outcomes through community initiatives and youth programming.  The Black Men’s Health Project began in 2012 with support from the Connecticut Health Foundation, and focused on both evaluating the health and health behaviors of the population in the North End as well as attending over 200 events at barbershops, churches, and community centers offering education and free screenings for common health issues. Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, Legacy served as a trusted messenger within the community regarding the most up to date health guidelines and sponsored community vaccination discussions and clinics.

The Legacy Nutrition Program was developed to help the scholars understand good nutrition and the effect that nutrition has on growing bodies and minds.  The program includes incentives to help purchase the food, live Zoom cooking classes for the students and families with a professional chef, reinforcement of nutrition education with the chef during classes and an ebook with the recipes and nutrition tips for the students to keep.  The classes are fun and focus on foods that are fun, healthy and easy to make – to entice the scholars to incorporate good nutrition into their families and lives!
